In this new age of deviantart where art is god, should we not be supportive in all things artistic?

this is a place for artists to come together and share their art.  it is not a place where people should fear backlash from those viewing their art.  now i will be forthcoming and honest that this was brought on by a recent event where a dear friend of mine was told her work was garbage and at best silly fanfiction.  she was writing a story that happened to touch on an existing story.  but in my eyes a fanfiction is when someone writes a story based around an existing story because they are a fan.

the story that was being written involved the goblin king jareth, the seelie king Oberon, the dark imp Rumpelstiltskin, and several other prominent figures from Fae lore.  it did not center around any one story but rather the general lore of the Fae world and how it operates even going as far as to point out that the Fae world is made up of countless realms each with it's own source of power and each quite separate from each other.  in my eyes it is a rather well thought out story.  at worst it needs some work on the interaction between certain fae but it is a work in progress and i have been lending her my books and knowledge on the topic to help her improve as the story goes along.  it is far from finished.  the end goal is to try and make it into a student film one day, maybe even a motion picture, and yet all that was offered to her in this case was constant comparisons to the movie the labyrinth.

it is fine to be a fan of something.  we all are.  but please be supportive and do not assume that your fandom is what others works are based off of.  and if you don't get a piece of art please realize that not everyone gets art.  some art meant to make people wonder and think.  some art is meant to be seen and understood.  and other art is meant to reveal the answer later on rather then right away.  books and movies are most often like the last category.  read a story and enjoy and explanations will come in time.  if you don't enjoy it then simply move on and don't wait for the explanations.  but patience is required in the art world as is respect and support lest the artists we love decide to stop.

god knows i am patiently waiting for the return of my dear kyndsie where ever she may be.

thank your for reading this and showing your support,

Jerks gonna jerk.

Artists do need to develop a thick skin, it seems. I don't know why people are so much more eager to share their "opinion" when they want to say something nasty.

Helpful and thoughtful critique can help an artist to be come great.  That being said, I don't believe that telling someone their work is "garbage" is helpful and it certainly isn't thoughtful.
